Why This Matters
Increased lean muscle mass is associated with higher metabolic rate, better blood sugar regulation, enhanced bone density, improved joint health, greater resistance to injury, reduced risk of chronic disease, and meaningfully better long-term health outcomes. The research on this is not contested. Strength training is among the most well-supported interventions in all of medicine.
But the practical effects matter just as much. Groceries become trivial. Furniture moves when you want it to. You keep up with your children — or your grandchildren. You do not become the person who needs help with things. Age-related muscle loss is real, it starts earlier than most people expect, and strength training is the most effective tool available for fighting it. The people who are strong in middle age maintain their independence, their mobility, and their quality of life in ways that people who aren't simply do not.
